Wine Down at La Fonda
Dear Friends,
After a busy and festive Indian Market last month, everyone at the hotel is recovering from the adrenaline rush that comes with the arrival of so many talented artisans, global visitors and heavy-weight visionaries to Santa Fe, like Zahn McClarnon and Kiowa Gordon of Dark Winds, who I had the pleasure of spending time with at the Institute of American Indian Arts fundraising gala. Every day was filled to the brim with art gallery openings, special events and fashion shows.

I even picked up a very cool pair of Jolene Bird designed shades, complete with inlaid natural turquoise and fire opal accents. I love them! And more importantly, the hotel came home with plenty of new and hip works by up-and-coming and established artists. My friend, the incredibly talented, Santiago Romero won best painting for his gorgeous work that was created during his residency at the Amerind Museum in Arizona. We added to our collection of Marla Allison (who won a blue ribbon for one of her gorgeous pieces) works with some smaller pieces that combine pottery inspiration with wild cranes – the pieces offer a fresh flight on her traditional geometric designs. Ira Lujan’s glass works continue to inspire us and we can’t wait to display the work of Louis Still Smoking, with his focus on bold, contemporary prints on historic ledgers. Plus, Sheldon Harvey’s abstract interpretation of corn pollen, combines hot and bold colors with cool night shadows on canvas – I can’t wait to hang it!

Our dynamic, energetic friend, Gregory Farah, spearheaded another fantastic Sovereign Santa Fe art show in our Lumpkins Ballroom. Featured artist, Craig George was present all weekend and showcased his signature real life paintings (we added another one to our collection!) along with new and vivid landscapes. Muscogee Poet, Joy Harjo read from her latest book, ‘For a Girl Becoming’ featuring celebrated Muscogee artist Dana Tiger’s powerful and emotional illustrations that bring the book to life.

This month, Santa Fe’s 30 year old Wine and Chile Fiesta unites wine and chile enthusiasts and has gained both national and international recognition. Pair over 90 local sous chefs with 80 specialized vintners and hundreds of diehard volunteers and the result is Santa Fe hospitality at its finest. Our President, Rik Blyth has been at the helm of the organization as board president for the past two years and his team continues to bring new and innovative elements to the festivities – like adding tequila tastings and local microbrews to the mix, making the event inclusive to all palates! There’s plenty of educational opportunities throughout the week, too. Click here to start planning your experience.
New Mexico’s arid terrain and rocky landscapes produce a range of chile varietals; our favorites are Hatch Green and Chimayo Red – with flavors that add both a punch and a kick to Chef Lane’s cuisine.
We’ve had a memorable summer and look forward to the calm that arrives with the changing seasons. Welcome to La Fonda this autumn!
Cheers,
Jenny
